CORKEN Reciprocating Gas Compressors

Compression Ratio and Temperature Considerations

Caution: Compression ratios are often constrained by the discharge temperature, which can rise significantly, especially when compressing certain gases. High compression ratios may lead to temperatures exceeding 350°F (177°C). To maintain safe and efficient operation, it is crucial to allow for adequate cooling intervals in the compressor’s duty cycle. This practice helps prevent excessive temperatures that could impact performance and reduce component lifespan.

Corken provides a selection of five vertical, single-stage compressors tailored for LPG/NH3 applications:

  • Models Available:

    • CORKEN 91
    • CORKEN 291
    • CORKEN 491
    • CORKEN 691
    • CORKEN 891
  • Connection Options:

    • Threaded NPT connections
    • Class 300 RF flanged connections
  • Capacity Range:

    • Covers liquid transfer capacities from 7.0 to 198.8 m³/hr.

Design Advantage: The Class 300 RF flange enhances leakage containment and provides superior structural integrity, ensuring reliable operation in demanding environments.

Piston Rod Packing Design

Corken’s standard LPG vertical compressors utilize a plain-style design featuring a single set of V-ring packing. However, the CORKEN 891 model stands out as it combines both V-ring packing and segmented packing.

Packing Types Explained:

  • V-ring Packing:

    • Composed of multiple V-shaped rings, male and female packing rings, washers, and a spring.
    • This configuration is standard across most Corken LPG vertical compressors, but it is important to note that these plain-style arrangements are not oil-free.
  • Segmented Packing:

    • Made up of packing cups, spacers, O-rings, segmented packing, backup rings, and a spring.
    • Used specifically in the CORKEN 891 model, offering an alternative sealing solution.

Oil-Free Compression Options:

For applications requiring oil-free gas compression, Corken recommends using their D-style or T-style compressors. Notably, the CORKEN 891 is unique among D-style compressors, as it is the only model that is not oil-free, while all other D-style options are designed for oil-free operation.

Single-Stage Compressor Design

Corken’s single-stage compressors are specifically designed for applications where the gas compression ratio is typically less than 5:1. These compressors are ideal for scenarios involving relatively low differential pressures. Common applications include:

  • Transport Operations
  • Rail Car Unloading
  • Marine Unloading by Vapor Differential

These applications benefit from the efficiency and simplicity of single-stage compression, making them suitable for handling liquefied gases effectively.
